Northern ACE

The north and Manchester in particular has seen a steady withdrawal of publishing and circulation teams since the early 1990’s, this has put a lot of pressure on the northern committee. However, Northern ACE remains very active and continues to focus on the aims of ACE overall. Northern Ace continues to host the Summer Pie and Christmas lunch events.

I began my working life in September 1964 at the Daily Mail in Manchester and have beeKeith DoneyKeith Doneyn working in this great industry ever since. I remember when I started my late father saying I was very lucky as “you had to be in the union or have a relative in the trade to get in “ – I was employed because the then Circulation Manager, Jack Collins, disliked long hair (this was the swinging 60’s) and I was straight from Grammar school with a crew cut! After seven years at the Mail I left and worked at Natsopa the Trade Union until I returned to the Mail in 1977. My earliest recollections of ACE were the functions my bosses would go to and sometimes appear not to come back for several days! I remember helping to take hundreds of raffle prizes up to the Grand Hotel in Manchester for the famous Northern Ace Xmas lunch and wishing one day I could actually see what went on. Manchester until the early 90’s was a major Publishing centre and had its own NPA and Northern Ace was extremely active with regular lunches and the famous Summer Pie and Xmas lunch. As my career progressed I was thrilled to become a member of ACE and in 1997 I was honoured to be made Chairman of Northern Ace. As the industry has changed, ACE has had to adapt and the Northern section has faced challenging times. ACE remains however an integral part of the industry and I value highly its social aspect and the contacts with friends and colleagues. Long may it prosper.
